How Can I Be Holy?

Chapter 5 – How Can I Be Holy?

  1. WHEN I WAS SAVED, I WAS CLEANSED FROM SIN AND AT THE SAME TIME I WAS SANCTIFIED. TO BE SANCTIFIED MEANS TO BE SEPARATED FROM SIN AND SET ASIDE FOR HOLY USE. HOW DID JESUS DESCRIBE SANCTIFICATION IN HIS PRAYER FOR US TO HIS FATHER? (JOHN 17:16)
  2. HOW DID HE ASK THE FATHER TO KEEP US SANCTIFIED? (JOHN 17:17)
  3. WHAT DOES THE WORD SAY THAT WE HAVE TO DO IN ORDER TO STAY SANCTIFIED
    (I JOHN 2:15)
  4. WHAT ARE THE THREE MAIN TEMPTATIONS OF THE WORLD? (I JOHN 2:16)
    • THE DESIRE FOR SINFUL HABITS, PLEASURES, FLESHLY DESIRES OUT OF GOD’S WILL.
    • GREEDY DESIRES OF THE MIND BROUGHT ON THROUGH LOOKING AT THINGS WITH YOUR EYES WITH IMPURE MOTIVES. JESUS GAVE AN EXAMPLE IN MATTHEW 5:28, “I TELL YOU THAT ANYONE WHO LOOKS AT A WOMAN LUSTFULLY HAS ALREADY COMMITTED ADULTERY WITH HER IN HIS HEART.” LUST INVOLVES IMPURE THOUGHTS. LUST IS NOT THE SAME AS NOTICING THE BEAUTY OF SOMEONE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX AND ADMIRING THEM. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF ABOUT THIS, HOWEVER, AND DON’T CLAIM TO BE ADMIRING SOMEONE WHEN YOUR THOUGHTS WERE REALLY INVOLVING SIN.
    • FALSE CONFIDENCE IN YOUR OWN STRENGTH AND IN THE STABILITY OF EARTHLY THINGS. THIS INVOLVES PUTTING OURSELVES FIRST WHEN WE SHOULD PUT JESUS FIRST IN OUR LIFE. DON’T FORGET THE SCRIPTURE IN PROVERBS 16:18, “PRIDE GOES BEFORE DESTRUCTION AND A HAUGHTY SPIRIT BEFORE A FALL.
  5. WHAT DID THE LORD SAY ABOUT HOLINESS? (LEVITICUS 19:2)
  6. WHEN JESUS REDEEMED US FROM SIN AND INIQUITY (LEANING TOWARD SIN), WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE DID HE SAY HE HAS MADE US? (TITUS 2:14)
  7. IF MY LIFE IS MY OWN, WHY CAN’T I DO WHAT I WANT? (I CORINTHIANS 6:19-20)
  8. ACCORDING TO JESUS, WHAT SORT OF LIFE IS THE ONLY REALLY TRUSTWORTHY AND STABLE WAY TO LIVE? (MATTHEW 7:24-27)
  9. WHAT DO WE HAVE TO DO IN ORDER TO BE JESUS’ DISCIPLES? (JOHN 8:31)NOTICE THAT ONLY AFTER WE HOLD TO JESUS’ TEACHING AND BECOME HIS DISCIPLES DO WE THEN KNOW THE TRUTH AND HAVE FREEDOM. MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE IN JESUS BUT DO NOT EXPERIENCE HIS FREEDOM BECAUSE THEY AREN’T WILLING TO FOLLOW HIS WORDS.
  10. IF I DON’T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH CERTAIN THINGS, WHY CAN’T I DO THEM
    (I THESSALONIANS 5:22)
  11. WHY CAN’T I KEEP MY OLD HABITS SUCH AS SMOKING AND DRINKING, IF I WANT TO, AFTER I’M SAVED? (I CORINTHIANS 3:16-17)
  12. WHAT ABOUT SEX? CAN I HAVE SEX OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE, WHENEVER I WANT TO?
    (I CORINTHIANS 6:12-20)
  13. WHY NOT? (I CORINTHIANS 6:20)IF YOU HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT LIVING IN YOU, THAT MEANS THAT JESUS LIVES IN YOU-THAT GOD HIMSELF HAS MADE YOU HIS HOME, HIS TEMPLE. WHATEVER YOU DO WITH YOURSELF, JESUS IS RIGHT THERE WITH YOU. SO IT IS NOT RIGHT TO INVOLVE THE TEMPLE OF GOD IN ACTS THAT MAKE GOD SAD AND CAUSE HIM PAIN AND ANGER.“THE TWO WILL BECOME ONE FLESH.” – GENESIS 2:24SEX INVOLVES BOTH A PHYSICAL AND A SPIRITUAL JOINING TOGETHER OF MAN AND WOMAN. GOD INTENDS FOR THAT BOND TO LAST FOR THEIR WHOLE LIFE THROUGH THE COVENANT OF MARRIAGE. WHEN YOU MAKE AND BREAK THIS SPIRITUAL BOND WITH ONE PERSON AFTER ANOTHER, YOU CAUSE A GREAT DEAL OF SPIRITUAL PAIN AND DAMAGE THAT LEADS PEOPLE TO BECOME HARD-HEARTED AND CALLOUS. SEX THEN BECOMES A TWISTED COPY OF THE BEAUTIFUL JOINING TOGETHER THAT GOD INTENDS IT TO BE.GOD IS NOT AGAINST PLEASURE – HE INVENTED IT. BUT HE IS AGAINST PEOPLE WHO ABUSE THE PLEASURE HE HAS CREATED SO THAT PEOPLE ARE HURT AND HIS HEART IS BROKEN. GOD DESIGNED THE JOINING TOGETHER OF MAN AND WOMAN TO OCCUR IN MARRIAGE SO THE BOND WOULD NOT BE BROKEN.
  14. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MY LIFE NOW AND WHEN I WAS A SINNER?
    (I CORINTHIANS 6:11)
  15. HOW DO I KNOW THAT I CAN LIVE A SANCTIFIED LIFE? (PHILIPPIANS 1:6)
  16. WRITE DOWN SOME OF THE SINS THAT YOU HAVE HAD VICTORY OVER SINCE YOU ACCEPTED JESUS INTO YOUR LIFE. ALSO, WRITE DOWN SOME OF THE PROBLEMS AND OLD SINFUL HABITS THAT YOU STILL STRUGGLE WITH. ASK GOD TO SET YOU FREE.IT IS WISE TO LOOK UP SCRIPTURES THAT HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT THE PARTICULAR SINS THAT YOU STRUGGLE WITH. FIND SCRIPTURES THAT GIVE YOU A PROMISE THAT GOD WILL SET YOU FREE. FOR EXAMPLE: FEAR – “FOR GOD DID NOT GIVE US A SPIRIT OF FEAR, BUT A SPIRIT OF POWER, OF LOVE, AND OF SELF-DISCIPLINE.” ( II TIMOTHY 1:7) IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO KEEP A JOURNAL OR A PAD OF PAPER HANDY AND WRITE DOWN YOUR PROBLEMS AND GOD’S ANSWERS TO THOSE PROBLEMS. KEEP THIS HANDY, AND WHEN YOU ARE BEING TEMPTED SIMPLY READ OUT LOUD (TO YOURSELF AND AGAINST THE DEVIL) GOD’S PROMISE FOR YOUR LIFE!MEMORIZE: II CORINTHIANS 5:17
