Scripture for the Day (January 4, 2016)

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou (hear) incline thine ear unto wisdom, and (do) apply thine heart to understanding (seeking it conscientiously and striving for it eagerly); Yea, if thou criest (hunger and thirst) after knowledge (insight), and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid (hidden) treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. (Proverbs 2:1-5)

Have you watched any of the treasure hunting shows on television in Alaska, the Colorado mountains, the Alaskan frontier, or the oceans of the world that contain shipwrecks of old? These guys and gals are passionate about what they do! They risk their lives and work very hard day after day just for a chance to find one precious treasure.

The Book of Proverbs is more than just a wisdom dictionary from God. It is a treasure map that leads you to the attitude and actions it takes to be successful in searching for God’s wisdom, which is worth far more than money or precious stones. It’s about defining the need for passion, hunger, and thirst in the search for wisdom and knowledge. They do not just drop out of the sky. You have to seek for them just like a treasure hunter.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. (Matthew 13:44)

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33)

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. (Matthew 5:6)

God is a “if then” God. If you will do this, then He will do that. The following is His promise to you in Proverbs 2 if you will seek His wisdom:

He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him. Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy. Wise choices will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe. Wisdom will save you from evil people, from those whose words are twisted. (Proverbs 2:7-12, NLT)

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. (Proverbs 3:13-15)
