Scripture for the Day – September 11, 2019

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. (Exodus 20:12)

When I was growing up, we were taught to honor our parents, elders, and teachers. When I joined the US Army, I was definitely taught to honor those in command or else. Somewhere down the line it appears that we have lost that foundational teaching. There is currently a constant drumbeat of dishonor for all those in authority. Let’s just take a minute and review some of the writings in the New Testament concerning this matter:

The New Testament Honorees (Honor Roll)

1. God (1 Timothy 6:16)

2. Jesus Christ (Hebrews 2:9)

3. Parents (Mark 7:10)

4. Widows (1 Timothy 5:3)

5. Elders, Governmental Leaders and Employers (1 Timothy 5:1; 6:1, Romans 13:1)

6. Spiritual Leaders (1 Timothy 5:17) (Double Honor)

7. Wives and Husbands (1 Peter 3:7; Ephesians 5:33)

The results of operating in dishonor is not good. Miriam, the sister of Moses, was struck with leprosy for dishonoring her own brother. Jesus could not do any miracles in His own hometown due to the people dishonoring Him. Ham’s lineage was cursed because he dishonored his father. On and on it goes and it’s not good!!!

At some point we have to realize that God is the one that promotes and sets people in authority and when you dishonor them you in fact are dishonoring God. You are questioning His judgment and wisdom and exalting yourself above God. That’s not good!!!

I recently heard a great sermon by Pastor Jentezen Franklin that we all need to hear and heed. It’s a “NOW” message on this very subject. We highly recommend that you click on the link below and take time to listen to this message.

Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: He putteth down one, and setteth up another. (Psalm 75:5-7)
