Scripture for the Day – December 30, 2019

And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. (Mark 10:18)

If I had to make a list of the most important things I have learned from God in 2019, the “Goodness of God” would be at the top of that list. We have done our best to explain it, teach it, and write about it, but there are just not enough words in the English language to come close to adequately defining the width and breadth of God’s goodness.

We were in Memphis, TN recently and we were trying our best to explain to a particular individual how good God is. Our scripture for the day in Mark 10:18 is a very powerful scripture on that subject!! This is one of the many scriptures we have used in trying to explain the pure goodness of God. One of the questions that came up during that discussion in reference to this scripture was this. Why did Jesus feel like He had to say this? What do you think He was getting at?

As we sat in church today, I felt God gave me an answer to those questions. It’s amazing what God will reveal to you in the midst of an anointed service. I hope I can explain to you what I felt and heard today.

The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost (the Trinity) are one, but they are also separate. They have known each other since the beginning of time. They are intimately acquainted with each other. For thousands of years humans have been trying to understand, predict,  and even explain to each other the character and nature of God. Most, if not all of those attempts(especially the intellectual and religious ones), are nowhere near the truth.

The three friends of Job are just one great example of the misconceptions we have about God. These men went on and on about God and this is what God said about what they had to say. And it was so, that after the Lord had spoken these words unto Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath. Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job. (Job 42:7-8)

Jesus knew about all these false portrayals of His Father that had been made for thousands of years. Now, Jesus (the Son) was here in the flesh, showing us a clear picture of the Father, and His own disciples were not getting it.

I hear in Mark 10:18 the frustration of Jesus, and the defense of His Father. The following are just some of what I personally think Jesus was thinking. You people just don’t understand!!! My Father is really, really good!!! You have been taught things like, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. I am telling you that my Father is the real deal. He is good through and through. There is no shadow of turning in Him. He is pure goodness and He is good all the time. I am just a reflection of His goodness!!!

Going through a long line of prophets, God has been addressing our ancestors in different ways for centuries. Recently he spoke to us directly through his Son. By his Son, God created the world in the beginning, and it will all belong to the Son at the end. This Son perfectly mirrors God, and is stamped with God’s nature. He holds everything together by what he says—powerful words! (Hebrews 1:1-3, The Message Bible)

Will we ever get it? Can our minds ever really understand it? I sure hope so!!!
