Scripture for the Day (November 24, 2015)

Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. (Luke 7:47)

Jesus had been invited to the home of a Pharisee (religious leader) . As he sat down to eat, a woman (who was a known sinner in the city) brought in an alabaster of ointment and began to anoint the feet of Jesus with the ointment and wash His feet with her tears and hair. The Pharisee thought within himself that Jesus must not be much of a prophet because if He was he would have known this woman was a sinner and would not have let her touch Him like this.

Jesus knew what the Pharisee was thinking and responded with this parable:

There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? Simon (the Pharisee) answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. (Luke 7:41-47)

I have seen this same scenario play out so many times over the years. The attention given to Jesus is so much different from a person that has been forgiven much than from a person that has been forgiven little. The people that I have met over the years that have been set free by Jesus from a life of bondage in drugs, alcohol, occults, criminal activity, and similar bondages, are totally aware of how hopeless their situation was and how thankful they are to Jesus for setting them free. You can not learn that from a book or a theology degree.

Do the religious people of today understand the kind of zeal and love of God that type of transformation produces? No they don’t! They often call these type people “Jesus freaks” and they are often ridiculed, mocked and discriminated against because of their outspoken and strong beliefs. Here again is where we have to ask ourselves a few questions.

How much attention are we giving to Jesus? We live in a world where we see people falling apart all around us and we know the answer (Jesus). Do we love enough to say that? Do we love enough to get involved? Do we love enough to give? This woman loved enough to give all she had, her tears, her ointment, and her love.

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7)
