“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all they mind. This is the first great commandment.”
(Matthew 22: 37 -38)

By Cheryl Henderson

A few years ago Ed and I wrote a book. (It was more Ed than me.) The name of the book is “For The Love of God. ”  Ed had been studying God’s nature for quite some time. It seemed that as we listened to preachers preach about who they thought God was, many times it just did not ring true to what we experienced. Some preachers preached that God was strict and mean, some said He would get you if you don’t do right. There were many other descriptive words that just did not set right in our hearts.

We talked often about how good God is, (Psalm 34:8) how merciful He is, (Romans 9:15-16) how much He loves us, what a great provider He is, He never changes, (Malachi 3:6), He is full of perfect wisdom, (Romans 11:33), He is faithful even if we are faithless, (2Timothy 2:13), and He is gracious, (Psalm 145:8) I could go on and on in describing what a mighty God we serve. I went back to church for the first time today without Ed. It was so hard. During worship all I could do was cry. I felt as though I was crawling right up in Jesus’ lap. My Pastor’s wife must have seen me crying and came over stood beside me and took my hand. It was communion Sunday for us and it was a holy time for me. I truly felt as though God was right there with me. I felt His presence, I felt His love, and I felt His arms around me. As I walk this new road without my husband I am seeing more and more the attributes of God as He sends others to hold my hand, Pray for me, bring me dinner, come to visit, and just be Jesus in the flesh. As He whispers in my ear that it is going to be ok I am with you and I will never leave you.

I pray that whatever you are going through that you too will see God in action in your life. I pray that as you practice Matthew 22:37-38 He will become more and more real, and more and more powerful in your life. I pray you feel His presence and hear His voice. I pray His Word comes alive in your heart. You and I can do what God has called us to do. Just love the Lord thy God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. God’s got us!
