Scripture for the Day – January 24, 2020

“Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory [is] above the earth and heaven.” Psalm 148:13

In Old Testament times, a name was not only identification, but an identity as well. Many times a special meaning was attached to the name. Names had, among other purposes, an explanatory purpose Throughout Scripture God reveals Himself to us through His various names. When we study these names that He reveals to us in the Bible, we will better understand who God really is. The meanings behind God’s names reveal the central personality, nature, and character of the One who bears them. The following is a list of some of the names associated with God in the Old Testament.

El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty) – the All-Sufficient One, the God of the Mountains, God Almighty – This refers to God completely nourishing, satisfying, and supplying His people with all their needs as a mother would her child.

El Elyon (The Most High God) – the Most Exalted God – Jesus is exalted high above every other name.

El Roi (The God that sees me)

Adonai (Lord, Master) God is Lord over all. He is King of Kings and Lord of lords. He reigns forever. You can therefore find safety in Him and Him alone.

Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah, the self-existent One) – And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you. (Exodus 3:14)

Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner) – the Lord my miracle, He gives us victory in spiritual warfare.

Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd) – A shepherd is one who feeds or leads his flock to pasture.

Jehovah Rophe (The Lord That Heals) – this denotes a God who reveals Himself unceasingly. Rapha (râpâ’) means “to restore”, “to heal” or “to make healthful”

Jehovah Shammah (The Lord Is there) – The name indicates that God has not abandoned Jerusalem (or us) leaving it in ruins, but that there will be a restoration. He never leaves us or forsakes us.

Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness) When we believe in Jesus He becomes our righteousness.

Jehovah Mekadesh (The Lord Who Sanctifies You) – Sanctification is the separation of an object or person to the dedication of the Holy.

Jehovah Jireh (the Lord will provide) He is our source of life in every way.

El Olam (The Everlasting God, The God of Eternity, The God of the Universe, The God of Ancient Days)

Elohim (God, Judge, Creator) – And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: (Genesis 1:26) – the “us” is understood in Christianity to refer to the Trinity. He is stronger than anyone or anything. When you face impossible circumstances, know that our God is stronger.

Qanna (Jealous, Zealous) – The fundamental meaning relates to a marriage relationship. God is depicted as Israel’s husband; He is a jealous God, wanting all praise for Himself and no other God.

Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace) – Shalom is a derivative of shâlêm (which means “be complete” or “sound”) Shalom is translated as “peace” or “absence from strife.” He is our shelter in the storm.

Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts, The Lord of Powers) – Jehovah Sabaoth can be translated as “The Lord of Armies”.

This is by no means an in-depth study of Hebrew, but it does give us a good glimpse of the character of God. Notice that God is good!!! His heart toward His people is one of a Father. He wants us to win, be at peace, be healed, and He will never leave us or forsake us in a storm. Thank you God for being our provider and protector!!!!!!!!!
