Scripture for the Day – August 14, 2020

Hebrews 4:12: For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one and they are in agreement. The Word of God and the Holy Spirit will never disagree or conflict. So how do you discern if what we are hearing is the voice of the Spirit or the leading of the Spirit or if it’s our carnal mind (soul) or our own thoughts? We do it by the Word of God.

I Corinthians 2:11-14: For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

I recently heard a preacher say, “We need the Word of God and the Spirit to be functioning together. But it seems like people are either emphasizing the importance of being led by the Spirit or the importance of the Word of God. But seldom do these two mix.”

I heard a teacher at a Bible school say that he had a young lady who always emphasized the importance of being led by the Spirit. She would criticize the teacher for always stressing the importance of the Word of God. One day she told her teacher that she had a dream and she saw him landing on Normandy Beach during World War II. There was a minefield in front of him, and one wrong step and he would die. In the dream the Lord gave him a choice. Would you rather have a voice directing you where to step or a map showing you where the mines were? In other words, would you rather have the Spirit leading you or a map? She thought she had him. He surprised her when he told her that it was a great illustration, and he believed it was from God. She said what do you mean? He asked her how do
you know if that voice is the right voice? Well, she said, “I just assumed it is the voice of God.” The teacher said that there are other voices out there. But, if you hear a voice saying take one step forward and you found it on the map and you put the two together that creates a certainty that you wouldn’t have otherwise.”

Everything the Lord says to me is subject to the Word of God!
