Scripture for the Day – May 22, 2020

Ephesians 5:18-19: And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.

How do you know when you are filled with the spirit? According to verse 19 of Ephesians 5 you will be speaking, and singing, and making melody in your heart to the Lord. If you are filled with the Holy Spirit it will be noticeable. You’ll know it and so will those around you. If you’re full of the Holy Spirit spiritual words will be coming out of your mouth; you’ll have a song in your heart. A sure sign of being filled and overflowing with the spirit is singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. You’ll see the joy of the Lord coming out of you.

Romans 14:17 says, “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit….” Let’s look at a few examples from scripture where someone was filled with or full of the Holy Spirit.

Luke 1:41-42 says, “And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”

Luke 1:67 says, “Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied.”

Acts 2:4 says, “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues.”

Acts 4:31 says, “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.”

Acts 6:3 says, “Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.”

Acts 11:24 speaks about Barnabus when it says, “For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.”

Acts 13:52 says, “And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.”

In these examples and others from scripture, where someone was filled or was full of the Holy Spirit, it says they spoke; prophesied; were led by the Spirit; spoke to the rulers; spoke the Word of God boldly; they were appointed over business; they gazed into Heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus; was full of faith, and filled with joy.

I like that every time they were filled with the Holy Spirit they did something, an action took place. After you are born again, Paul said in Ephesians 5:18 to constantly be being filled with the Holy Spirit.

Let’s stay filled up and spill out on others.
