Scripture for the Day (May 28, 2018)

Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. (Psalm 37:4)

When I was about 8-9 years old the desire of my heart was to be a preacher of the Gospel like a young preacher I had heard at my grandparent’s country church. I never pursued that God given desire and went down a totally different path. It wasn’t until I gave my life to the Lord at 35 years of age that I remembered that desire that was put in my heart years before. It was then that I started down the path to accomplish that dream of being a preacher. In 1986, at the age of 40, my wife and I were both ordained.

Most people look at Psalm 37:4 and look at it in only one way. They look at their desires as their personal desires and it can mean that. But more than that, those desires can be God planted desires. It can go both ways, but God’s desires are the ones that are the most important and those are the ones that need our close attention. I wish I had paid more attention in my earlier years. Thank God that He is long suffering and merciful. He will not recall the calling. He will stay patient and wait on us.

For all of you that have been down this same wrong road, be advised that God will welcome you with open arms once you decide to follow the true calling on your life. The years that we have spent in ministry have been a real adventure. They have been a mixture of His desires and our desires as we have delighted ourselves in Him.

I was talking with a man from Canada the other day and it spurred a memory that illustrates this back-and-forth love affair with the Lord. Several years ago, my wife and I were in Kelowna, BC, Canada. We conducted a marriage seminar at a local hotel for a group of business people. We flew into Vancouver and were picked up by one of their people at the airport. On the way back to the Vancouver airport I told the driver that I had never seen a moose in the wild and hoped we would see a moose on the road back to Vancouver. He looked at me like I was crazy and told me he traveled this road every day going to work for years and he had never seen a moose on that road.

Well, about 20 miles into this trip, a great big moose came lumbering across the road in front of us. Our driver was flabbergasted!!! I wish you could have seen the expression on his face. In my opinion, that was no accident. God spoke to that moose to cross that road at that very exact minute. I think God gets a kick out of doing those type little things for His kids who are delighting themselves in Him.

He will give you the desires of your heart also. All you have to do is delight yourself in the Lord.

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, (Ephesians 3:20)

Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me? (Jeremiah 32:27)
