Scripture for the Day (February 26, 2018)

The Lord openeth the eyes of the blind: the Lord raiseth them that are bowed down: the Lord loveth the righteous: (Psalm 146:8)

Job was an upright family man that feared God. He suffered greatly and mistakenly attributed all his sufferings to the hand of God instead of recognizing that Satan was the actual culprit. Job’s religious friends constantly tried to convince him that he must have done something wrong to earn all these tragedies. At the end of this long ordeal Job had a personal encounter with God and finally realized that everything he and his friends believed was wrong and he and his friends needed to repent. That personal experience with God opened Job’s eyes.

I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes. (Job 42:5-6)

And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. (Job 42:10)

Jonah was a seasoned prophet of God that had made vows to go and say whatever God wanted him to say. However, the people of Nineveh were the arch enemies of the Jewish nation and Jonah wanted nothing to do with this assignment so he ran the opposite direction. Jonah ended up dead in the belly of a big fish. He cried out to God from the belly of hell and finally came to his senses and agreed with God that salvation was God’s business and not his own. When those words came out of Jonah’s mouth God raised him from the dead and used him to save an entire city.

I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God. When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord. And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. (Jonah 2:6-10)

Peter was a commercial fisherman that was changed into a fisher of men when his eyes were opened and he saw that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God.

He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 16:15-17)

Paul was a Pharisee and a persecutor of Christians until he met Jesus on the Damascus road and was later healed from his blindness.

And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. (Acts 9:3-6) And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. (Acts 9:18)

It is amazing what God can do through a family man (Job), a Prophet (Jonah), a fisherman (Peter), and a Pharisee (Paul), when they swap their religion for a relationship with God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Ghost. It changes everything!!!
