Scripture for the Day (June 15, 2017)

Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. (James 3:5, NIV)

We have covered this subject on multiple occasions but it seems that with every passing day the rhetoric in our country gets worse and worse. There appears to be nothing sacred or off base anymore. Comedians, talk show hosts, political leaders and Broadway shows (just to name a few) have no ethical boundaries. It’s no wonder we woke up this morning to the shooting of Congressmen at a ball field. You cannot keep spewing out this venom and not expect it to result in tragedy. Words really do matter!!!

Consider the following scriptures about our words and actions:

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words. (Proverbs 18:21, Amplified Bible)

A soft and gentle and thoughtful answer turns away wrath, But harsh and painful and careless words stir up anger. (Proverbs 15:1, Amplified Bible)

Knowledge flows like spring water from the wise; fools are leaky faucets, dripping nonsense. (Proverbs 15:2, The Message Bible)

The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered. (Proverbs 17:27, NIV)

For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. (Matthew 12:37)

But now rid yourselves [completely] of all these things: anger, rage, malice, slander, and obscene (abusive, filthy, vulgar) language from your mouth. (Colossians 3:8, Amplified Bible)

Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. (James 3:3-6)
