Scriptures for the Day (April 17, 2017)

Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. (Proverbs 6:2) Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. (Proverbs 18:21)

One of the things that we have concentrated on in our recent devotionals has been our ability to hear God personally. I don’t know if you realize this or not but what we say out of our mouth effects our two-way communications with God. God can always hear us, but sometimes He chooses not to hear us because of what we have spoken out of our mouths:

Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. (Isaiah 59:1-3)

I heard a sermon recently from Pastor Robert Morris of Gateway Church that summarizes ten things that come out of our mouth that adversely affect our relationship and communication with God. The following is a brief synopsis of those ten things:

LyingLying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight. (Proverbs 12:22) When we lie we are speaking against the nature of God which is the truth.

Sowing Discord – Proverbs 6 lists seven things that are an abomination to God which includes the following: A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. (Proverbs 6:19)

GossipA perverse man spreads strife, And one who gossips separates intimate friends. (Proverbs 16:28)

Slander/False Report Let not a man of slanderous tongue be established in the earth; let evil hunt the violent man to overthrow him [let calamity follow his evildoings]. (Psalms 140:11)

Tale BearingA talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter. (Proverbs 11:13)

CursingAs he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him. (Psalms 109:17)

BlasphemyYou shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain [that is, irreverently, in false affirmations or in ways that impugn the character of God]; for the Lord will not hold guiltless nor leave unpunished the one who takes His name in vain [disregarding its reverence and its power]. (Exodus 20:7, Amplified Bible)

Filthy LanguageBut now rid yourselves [completely] of all these things: anger, rage, malice, slander, and obscene (abusive, filthy, vulgar) language from your mouth. (Colossians 3:8)

Contentious SpeechDo nothing from factional motives [through contentiousness, strife, selfishness, or for unworthy ends] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the true spirit of humility (lowliness of mind) let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves]. (Philippians 2:3, Amplified Bible)

UnbeliefTake heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. (Hebrews 3:12)

God gives us a choice to speak life or death, blessing or cursing. He gives us a choice to walk by faith or to walk by sight. He gave us a tongue which can be the most unruly member of our body or the most creative and miraculous member of our body. He gave us His Word of truth which we can believe or not believe. We all have the same choices. The question is, what’s your choice????

We recommend you listen to the entire sermon on this subject by Pastor Morris at the following link:
