Scripture for the Day (December 19, 2016)

II Corinthians 2:9-10 says, “But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him. But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”

The above scripture has probably been one of the most guiding and most revealing in my personal walk with the Lord. It is so easy for all of us to get stuck in the natural. We tend to rely solely on what we see, hear, and understand. We live in a world where we are constantly bombarded by the news media, professors, and so-called experts. If we aren’t really careful, we can get sucked into the attitude that we are really smart and really understand more than we really do. That is called arrogance!

One of the things that I have learned (the hard way) is that God is a lot smarter than I am. If you take the time to read Chapters 38-42 in the Book of Job you will see how God addressed Job and his counsellors on their depth of knowledge and understanding. Here are just a couple examples:

Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? (Job 38:2)

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. (Job 38:4)

God went on for five chapters like this and as He did Job and his counsellors shrunk lower and lower in their esteem of their personal knowledge and understanding. It was brutal! In the end, Job made this statement:

I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes. (Job 42:5-6)

We can’t see everything God has for us with our physical eyes and ears. They are seen with the eyes of the heart; they are seen and heard spiritually. In Ephesians 1:18 Paul’s prayer for the church says, “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.” I Corinthians 2:14 says, “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” In John 16:13 Jesus said, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”

God doesn’t show us everything we are supposed to do all at once because if He did we would be walking by sight instead of walking by faith (II Corinthians 5:7). But by His Spirit He will lead us and guide us into all truth and He will show us things to come.

Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us…..” Once again, that power that works in us is the power of the Holy Spirit that will lead us and guide us through the Word to that place which is exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we can ask or think. Pay attention as you read His Word! The very thing that you could normally never think of could very well be God speaking to you.

Thank you Lord, that by the power of your Holy Spirit the eyes of our understanding are being opened.
