Scripture for the Day (November 21, 2016)

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. (2 Timothy 3:16)

When I was growing up we only had a very few sources for our nightly news. Those sources consisted of the local newspaper, radio, and Walter Cronkite after television became available. In those days, you could pretty well rely on those three sources to give you the straight scoop. Things have changed a lot in the last 60 years!

We now have ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, PBS, FOX, plus the Internet, Facebook, Twitter and a multitude of other sources and they are all competing for the same market. If it wasn’t apparent to you before, it should be very apparent after the current election, that it is almost impossible to get the straight scoop anymore. If you listen to only one of these sources you are going to be led astray by internal bias coming from a multitude of different directions. The distortions, spin, and outright lies are just remarkable.

The good news is this. We have the Good News! The scripture tells us that if we lack wisdom we can ask God and He will give it to us.

If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5, Amplified Bible)

The good news is this. We have the Holy Spirit to guide us!

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (John 14:16-17)

But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father—the message regarding the Son], and He will disclose to you what is to come [in the future]. (John 16:13, Amplified Bible)

The Bible warns that there will be a multitude of false prophets in the end times. A prophet is one that speaks forth. We have always associated that warning with false prophets in the church. Maybe, just maybe, the warning was much more far reaching than that. God obviously knew that in the times we live in that communication via different types of media would expand greatly and allow many different types of false prophets, such as news commentators, to flood the airwaves with all kinds of spin and bias.

That is why it is imperative that you and I know the Word of God and that you and I have a personal relationship with God. Things are not always as they seem and the only way you and I are going to be able to sort them out is by the Good News and the Holy Spirit. God sees through all the smoke and spin. He is not a man to lie. We have to be led by the Spirit. We have to walk by faith and not by sight. If our foundation is not solidly on the Rock (Jesus Christ and His Word) we will be deceived and we will be led astray.

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. (1 John 4:1)

I encourage you today to make a personal commitment that from this day forward your controlling News will come from Heaven and not from media outlets alone. Regardless of what you see or hear on your news outlets make a commitment to rely on the Good News and the Holy Spirit. If you do that, everything will work out fine.
